8: Masai Mara Park
The Mara is impressive in its grand sweep of savannah highlighted with the familiar flat-topped acacia trees so often seen in photos. The park is rich with wildlife, the greatest density of any reserve in the region. So, it’s not unusual to come upon some or all of Africa’s “Big Five”, including lion and leopard. And during the Great Migration from July to October, this reserve becomes the site of the greatest animal show on earth.
Crossing into the park over the Mara River is a fantastic avalanche of wildebeests and zebra advancing in search of life-sustaining vegetation.Waiting for them are crocodiles and other predators playing out the endless cycle of life on the African plain. It is a never to be forgotten spectacle.
If you wish you can also view this awesome display from above on an optional hot air balloon safari. You’ll rise into the prevailing winds early in the morning and float over the infinite herds below, forging ahead as they have for millions of years.
For another experience of the Mara’s timelessness, take an optional visit to a local Masai village. Here you’ll meet the villagers and see firsthand their bomas and learn about their lives.
We shall visit the Mara river where we watch hippos & crocodiles or maybe the great migration (July – October)Other options at the Masai mara

We’ll take a sailing safari across this lake looking for weavers, fire finches, cormorants, and pelicans. As we glide by the hippos foraging about, we may also take in giraffe and zebra grazing on the nearby shore of this idyllic spot.
Then it’s a quick trip to Crescent Island Game Sanctuary, a private preserve where we’ll enjoy a guided walking safari amongst the grazing buffalo, zebra, and giraffe. And if bicycling is more your speed, take advantage of an optional riding safari at nearby Hell’s Gate National Park.
This is a place of dramatic cliffs, canyons, and active steam vents rising from the earth below. But it’s also an easy-going opportunity to bicycle past impala, eland, and even baboon.
