Situated 35kms, South East of Stone Town, this unique national park is famous for its Red Colobus monkey which is an endangered rain forest species. The park is home to populations of Zanzibar red colobus monkey (an endangered species found only on Zanzibar) as well as other monkey species, bushbabies, duikers and more than 40 species of birds. The park also has several interesting features including the mangrove forest, the lush evergreen coastal bush, grasslands, and saline groundwater forests.
Starting off this 3hour tour ideally at 8:00am will give you ample time to walk around the park taking in the numerous attractions. Zanzibar’s climate is at its peak, and now is the best time to visit Zanzibar for a beach holiday tour. Enjoy days characterized with clear sunny days and warm weather. Popular activities involve snorkelling, diving, and sunset sailing.
Zanzibar In June and July – The months from June to October are the best times to go to Zanzibar. During this time, the heavy rains have cleared. Additionally, the weather conditions are perfect for long days, busking in the sun and exploring the ‘Spice Island’ , maybe on a romantic Zanzibar honeymoon trip.
Zanzibar In August – the last months on the Island with a cool weather. During August through to October is not too hot and not too humid. The climate is more of steady as the islands begin to warm up for the summer.
Zanzibar In September – a truly wonderful month in Zanzibar, but the Island has something special for you – the turtle hatching in Zanzibar and incredible diving conditions in deeper waters.
October To January
Zanzibar experiences cooler winds, calm seas and clear skies in October. The main highlights include a dive with the whale sharks around the coral reefs.
Zanzibar In October – another ideal time for travelling to Zanzibar. Days are made up of cool winds, calm beaches and clear skies. The daytime temperatures begin to rise whereas during evenings it gradually become warmer, just before the rains of November commence.
Zanzibar In November – off to November’s when the ‘short rains’ arrive. Characterized by abrupt afternoon showers. A tip for November; keep in mind that it offers mostly sunny mornings for enjoying the beach or pool relaxation, but generally expect short-showers in the afternoons.
Zanzibar In December – expect more chances of sunshine towards Christmas and New Year’s Eve. December presents a rare opportunity to dive with whale sharks in the Islands turquoise waters.
Zanzibar In January – great time to visit Zanzibar if you don’t mind the heat and humidity. The days are super sunny and hot, remember to bring your sunscreen. January through to early March offer some of the best diving conditions. This climate marks some of the finest diving conditions of the year.
February To May
The months of February to March offer excellent diving opportunities, clear conditions in and around coral reefs and lagoons. Low number of tourists, meaning during this time you can take advantage of the good safari rates.
Zanzibar In February – the days are still sunny and hot throughout. Changes will be experienced as from mid-March as the arrival of ‘long rains’ become more looming.
Zanzibar In March – change in weather will be felt as from mid-March with the arrival of the ‘long rains’.
Zanzibar In April and May – Expect many lodges to close during this period, while those that remain open will offer cheap safari rates and offers. This marks the start of what’s known as the ‘long rains’ in Zanzibar. The rainfall in April and May is far heavier than any other time of year. This might not be a good time to visit Zanzibar tropical beaches. These months are considered the low safari seasons.
How To Get To Zanzibar Island
Zanzibar International Airport: located in historic Stone Town, the only airport on the island is served by flights from Nairobi and Dar es Salaam. Once you have arrived, take a taxi to your accommodation or enjoy the services of your hotel’s shuttle bus.
There are some direct flights to Zanzibar offered by Kenyan Airways, Condor, Jetfly, Ethiopian Airways, Oman Air, Qatar Airlines, Arkia Israeli Airlines, KLM, FlyDubai, Meridian, Easyjet, Mango and Turkish Airlines. The easiest way to get to the Zanzibar Archipelago is by plane.
Alternatively, a ferry operates from the harbour in the center of Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar City. It runs four times a day and prices are usually half that of plane tickets (around $35 at time of writing). The ferry takes around two hours. Note that the seas can be rather rough, so be prepared if you are likely to suffer sea sickness, kindly take a fly-in safari to Zanzibar.
There are scheduled flights from Zanzibar Island to Pemba and Mafia Island, but a boat transfer would take you from Zanzibar to Mnemba or Chumbe.
Motorbikes and scooters can be hired for an easy and fun way to get around the island though the streets of Stone Town are for walking only.
Remember there are you can fly from Kenya to Zanzibar after your Kenya wildlife safari, or rather it is possible to combine a safari in Kenya with a trip to Zanzibar. The flight networks are excellent, making fly-in safaris in Zanzibar 100% possible. The currency used in the Zanzibar Island is mostly the Tanzanian Shilling. Most tourism services charge US dollars, and they also accept credit cards at most properties. Many vendors do not accept American Express, so it would be better to travel with either Visa or MasterCard. They generally accept traveller’s cheques and cash at hotels and Bureau de Changes. USD is the preferred currency.
If you plan on taking cash, make sure you take large bills (e.g. $50 or $100) as these, for some unknown reason, always get a better rate. Don’t go running to that first Bureau you see at the airport, as these, along with the hotels and resorts, usually have the worst exchange rate. If you are planning to take a taxi into town, pay the fare in USD and go to a bureau in town. There are many all over town. Try to negotiate a better rate – you never know.

-A passport is required for all foreign visitors and must be valid for at least six months.
– Citizens of most countries require a visa. A list of countries that don’t need a visa is available.
– Visas are best obtained in advance through an official online visa-application portal, but they can also be obtained through your local Tanzanian embassy or high commission.
– Visas can also be obtained on arrival. But an early application is recommended to avoid safari delays.
-When arriving from a yellow-fever-infected country in Africa or the Americas, a yellow-fever vaccination certificate is required.

Zanzibar Travel Insurance is a mandatory requirement for all travellers, regardless of their existing medical or travel insurance covers, and can be purchased online before arrival at a cost of USD 44 per person.

Tipping in guidelines for Kenya and Tanzania safaris – although not mandatory, is expected in return for good service.
All hotels, lodges, and porterage gratuities are included in the cost of your safari – these are collectively referred to as the service charge.
You may also decide to tip individual waiters, porters, and other hotel service employees who provide exemplary service. Usually, $1 – $5 per meal or move is appropriate and appreciated.
It is, however, customary to tip your safari driver/guide at the end of the safari tour. The amount is dependent on your evaluation of the quality of the service rendered. An average of $10 per guest per day or 5-10% of your safari-only cost is suggested. However, the amount is at your discretion – you are welcome to provide additional compensation to any staffer who has provided special services. A bar gratuity of $1 is acceptable.
