About Soysambu Conservancy

Soysambu Conservancy is a wildlife conservancy in Kenya located in between Lake Elmenteita Wildlife Sanctuary and Lake Nakuru Park. This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site under Kenya Lakes System in the Great Rift Valley which includes Lakes Elmenteita, Nakuru and Bogoria. Soysambu Conservancy is also part of a Ramsar Site and Important Bird Area. Soysambu Conservancy hosts a significant population of the Rothschild’s Giraffe – Nubian Giraffe.  The giraffes are a successful story of Soysambu’s Endangered Species Recovery Program.

The Soysambu Conservancy is an ecologically diverse conservancy, stretching 48,000 acres and offering a blend of natural habitats that support a wide variety of wildlife.

It is important, with over 450 bird species found here making it a spot for birdwatchers and conservationists to visit. This includes a population of 28 percent of the world’s Lesser Flamingos, a marvelous sight. Soysambu Conservancy also acts as a home for over 10,000 mammals representing over 50 species. These mammals include the endangered Rothschild giraffes, of which there are over 90.

This, in turn, has put much pressure on the conservancy to strike a balance between the sustainability of wildlife and livestock management and the livelihood of the communities. In advocating for land use and the conservation of wildlife, Soysambu secures its rich biodiversity and provides a source of income in the local economy, maintaining a haven that will persist for future generations of wildlife and people alike.
