Malindi & Watamu Scuba Dive Seasons
Malindi and Watamu, like any other places in the world experience high and low diving seasons.
High Season is from October to Mid-March, and is the best diving period to the Marine Park and reserve.
A good number of the ocean visitors pass along the coast of Kenya on their seasonal migration: whale sharks and humpback whales are often spotted passing through between October and February.
Low season begins from Mid-March through September.
During this period, we only do dives from Malindi where there are a few dive sites accessible.
Top 8 Best Scuba Diving Sites In Malindi Beach
Malindi boasts extensive shorelines of beautiful pristine sandy beaches and offshore corals. The combination of these reefs forms three bays full of marine life: Watamu Bay, Turtle Bay, and Blue Lagoon. Another charming destination is Mida Creek, a significant mangrove habitat characterized by dramatic currents, 6km long corals, and fantastic birdlife. 1. Turtle Island Point
At the ‘Turtle Point’ you dive on a long reef at a depth between 10 and 16 metres. Rich with fish, spiral shaped sea plants and sea slugs, as well as a big number of sea turtles. Keep in mind that diving here is characterized by currents. As the name suggests, turtles can often be seen on this reef.
2. Drummers Reef
At the ‘Drummers Reef’ dive site, diving shall be along a canal where you reach a garden of anemones, and where parrot fish of any colour and dimension reside. You can dive down up to 32metres and often see fish of big dimensions. The special feature of this site is a large flower-like anemone surrounded by small shrimps and pipefish. Furthermore, you dive over an ‘anemone meadow’ and to an extremely beautifully overgrown and lively coral block, where rocking fish in various colors are not uncommon.
3. Papa Point
Papa Point, which takes the Swahili name for whale shark, offers divers a gentle drift dive with an amazing array of corals and schooling fish life. You might encounter schools of big barracuda fish, of turtles, morays, rays, crocodile fish, lobsters and white fin sharks of the barrier. There are also jack fish and giant groupers.
4. Brain Coral
A diving site suited for all levels, both beginners and experienced divers can enjoy encounters with schools of jack fish, “luxianides”, leopard and rhino morays, sea eels and not so rare is the encounter with the whale shark and the dolphins. Incredible the variety and the quantity of colourful fish.
5. Canyon
Canyon is a spectacular diving site. At 20 metres depth you will cross a big canal where you can encounter leaf-fish, rays, napoleon wrasses, white fin sharks and, sometimes, the rare toadfish.
6. Tewa Reef
At ‘Tewa Reef’ diving site is well suited for all. At a maximum depth of 10 metres expect encounters with a varied quantity of barrier fish, anemones, monkfish and big lobsters. Due to the abundance of plankton in Watamu Bay, there is a chance of encountering manta rays and whale sharks all along the reef. The best time to see these animals is from November to the end of March.
7. Caracas
Characterized by the presence of big morays, jack fish, schools of blue file fish (red teeth). Not rare is the encounter with the parrot fish.
8. Black Coral
At a depth of 30 to 40 meters there is black coral here, the appearance of which is not known to many divers. A diving site suited for all levels, with schools of jack fish, “luxianides”, leopard and rhino morays, sea eels and not so rare is the encounter with the whale shark and the dolphins. Incredible the variety and the quantity of colourful fish.

When To Scuba Dive In Malindi Beach
Best time of year to go diving in Malindi -Watamu is between November and April with the larger whale sharks and manta ray spotting generally occurring in January to the end of March. May and June are not advised for the best diving but the dive centre its open for diving and training all year.
