Weather & climate varies greatly within Tanzania. Located just south of the equator, Tanzania features a pleasant, tropical climate, but it has large regional climatic differences influenced by several factors, including altitude. Altitude also plays a large role in determining rainfall patterns, with the higher elevations receiving more precipitation. That said, take note that the hottest and most humid part of the country is the coastal areas.
It is correct to say that Tanzania is characterized by two seasons; Dry and Wet season. In the highland areas, temperatures range between 10 and 20 degrees Celsius during the cold and hot seasons, respectively.
You might be wondering, what are the temperatures like in Tanzania? Generally, the country has temperatures rarely falling lower than 20 °C (68 °F) throughout the year. The hottest period extends between November and February with temperatures at (25–31 °C or 77.0–87.8 °F) whereas the coldest period occurs between May and August with temperatures at (15–20 °C or 59–68 °F). You might ask, what is Tanzania’s climate like? Tanzania, being near the equator, has a tropical climate with a long dry season and two rainy seasons. It also features regional climate variations. Northern Tanzania has gentler weather than the south, which can be hot and dry. However, the hottest and most humid weather occurs toward the tropical coast – Zanzibar and its surroundings. At altitude, temperatures are moderate all year but drop at night.

There is little to no rainfall during the long dry season which lasts throughout June, July, August, September and October, even on the islands. Humidity is very low – be sure to pack warm clothing because morning game drives in open vehicles will be cold, especially in the northern parks. Towards the beginning of June, Tanzania is blanketed by green vegetation and is a great time for bird-watching. June is dry, and considered a good time of year to visit for Tanzania luxury safaris. Interestingly, the migration begins heading north from Grumeti River in June before attempting their death-defying river crossings.
July is the start of the long, dry season so you can expect comfortable temperatures of around 25°C-30°C. The East Africa safari season is at its peak, signaling July as the best time to travel to Tanzania. Ideal weather and excellent game drive opportunities, as well as a good time to go on a combined Kenya and Tanzania safaris. The Great Migration has just started in July in Tanzania, & they should have reached the northern parts of the Serengeti, getting ready to cross the dangerous waters of the Mara River into Kenya.

Tanzania in October – It’s the end of the Dry season. It is hot and the dry season starts to fade out. The Great Migration animals will have moved into Kenya come October but that doesn’t mean there’s no animals left to spot in Tanzania. If you’re up in Northern Serengeti, you may see a few last minute river crossings. Towards the end of October, the short rains may start to arrive.

The Wet Season Climate In Tanzania
As for March, April and May. Afternoon short downpours are to be expected – which are heavier and more predictable beside the coast and on the islands. The wet season (also called the rainy season) runs from the end of October right through to December, and then again from the end of March to the beginning of June. Below are weather conditions to expect during the wet season in Tanzania.
November & December – ‘Short rains’ – It’s still a great time to visit. The ‘short rains’ begin in November, but this means rainfall only occurs for a short period each day (usually in the afternoon or at night), so you still have plenty of day time sunlight hours to explore Tanzania, as the rains will rarely interfere with your safari. Tanzania in December – towards the middle of December, the short wet season is ending, it’s a great month for visiting Zanzibar, as the temperatures are slowly rising. Rainfall starts to decrease and the Christmas period first approaches, as most travellers start travelling to Tanzania in droves and festive celebrations start to ramp up.
January & February – for those planning trips to Tanzania in January, it’s hot and dry with average temperatures between 26°C and 30°C. The temperatures start rising after the short rains in November and December. It is the calving season on the Ndutu Plains, so visiting in January, allows you to see Wildebeests herds move into the southern Serengeti to give birth to their calves. Similarly, February remains a perfect month to visit Tanzania, one of the ideal months for trekking Kilimanjaro Mountain, for safaris in the northern and southern parks, and for visiting Zanzibar for a beach holiday.
March, April & May – ‘Long rains’ – These are the wettest months. It tends to rain heavily almost every day, although not every so often for the whole day. The beginning of the month is still great for safari and beach trips. The Wildebeest migrating herds’ starts heading west towards the Grumeti River, though the temperatures still very hot. Thunderstorms can occasionally happen during this time, as well as regular rainfall, but this means that Tanzania’s bird species are out and about, making for prime viewing. April is by far the wettest month of the safari calendar as rains predominantly come in the form of afternoon thundershowers, it’s not unusual to have big storms at night, as well as plenty of grey days.

When Is The Best Time to Climb Kilimanjaro Mountain
The best time for trekking Kilimanjaro Mountain is during the dry season (from January to March and from June to October). During these months, the weather is more stable with minimal risk of rain, making the climb safer and more enjoyable. At higher altitudes, however, be prepared for very cold temperatures, especially at night.
Important: avoid April and May, when the rainy season can make the trails slippery and dangerous.

Q. Do I need special photo safari equipment to join a Kenya photographic safari?
Having the right wildlife photographic equipment’s can make a big difference on an African photo safari however, what you bring in the long run is up to you. Most travel operators allow you to bring your own gear (highly recommended), while some offer photographic equipment rentals.
From our African safari photography tips and advice on the essential gear and settings, you will be expected to have an SLR (Single Lens Reflex), DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) or mirrorless camera, as opposed to a point-and-shoot.
It’s a good idea to have at least two lenses on a photographic tour, including a telephoto lens. How big a telephoto lens you need depends a little on where you will go on your African safari. If off-road driving is allowed, you’ll be able to get quite close to animals and in these cases, a 200mm or 300mm lens will be satisfactory. Even better is a 400mm or 500mm capacity lens, especially in main national parks where off-road driving is not allowed.
It is great if you can avoid having to change lenses by having your lenses permanently set on different cameras. That way, you don’t lose time changing lenses during fast-moving action. Almost all Africa safari lodges and tented camp accommodations during your safari provide free Wi-Fi. You’ll find this available in all three accommodation levels – comfort or luxury accommodations.
Wi-Fi is provided in the public areas of the safari lodges/tented camps including the reception, dining areas, and lounge. It is not provided in the individual rooms/tents.
Moreover, because you will be inside a wilderness park, we still request that you come prepared with your own network data to avoid any inconveniences.

Because you’ll need to frequently hydrate during your safari, we ensure unlimited supplies of drinking water.
All Vulture Africa Safari vehicles are fitted with a cooler box or mini fridge with a constant supply of cool, bottled water.
We replenish our supplies of drinking water during stops along the safari route.

All rooms/tents during your safari are fitted with mosquito nets or are insect-proofed to protect you against bites.

Q. Is it possible to store excess luggage while on safari?
Vulture African Safaris understands that your holiday travel may be lengthy and could involve different activities during your trip. You may find the need to store some of your luggage at various times.

Please let us know your arrival & departure flight details including airline codes and arrival/departure times. We will provide you with the name of your driver and telephone contact in advance of your arrival/departure.
Q. Do you book or can you recommend a Nairobi hotel for our pre or post-safari stay?
If you are arriving in Nairobi earlier than your safari starting date or are intending to stay a few days more after your safari finish, you will require a Nairobi hotel.
Our listed safari tours and advertised prices do not include your Nairobi hotel.
Nairobi has a wide range of hotels in the economy, comfort, and luxury categories suitable for your 1 night or extended stay.
As part of your safari tour, Vulture Africa Safaris will pick you up at the airport and bring you to your respective Nairobi hotel or residence. This includes most areas around Nairobi.
We suggest that you look up and book online your preferred Nairobi hotel. If you should require advice, suggestions, or booking assistance for your Nairobi hotel, we will be happy to assist.

Sim cards can be purchased from official stores or approved resellers. You can purchase them at the Nairobi airport upon arrival. Cost is approximately $1 or Ksh.100
To purchase local sim cards, you are required to have a Sim-unlocked GSM-compatible phone.
Q. What are your recommended safari tipping guidelines?
Tipping in guidelines for Kenya and Tanzania safaris – although not mandatory, is expected in return for good service.
All hotels, lodges, and porterage gratuities are included in the cost of your safari – these are collectively referred to as the service charge.
You may also decide to tip individual waiters, porters, and other hotel service employees who provide exemplary service. Usually, $1 – $5 per meal or move is appropriate and appreciated.
It is, however, customary to tip your safari driver/guide at the end of the safari tour. The amount is dependent on your evaluation of the quality of the service rendered. An average of $10 per guest per day or 5-10% of your safari-only cost is suggested. However, the amount is at your discretion – you are welcome to provide additional compensation to any staffer who has provided special services. A bar gratuity of $1 is acceptable.
