Situated Northwest of Stone Town, Prison Island also known as Changuu Island is one of the historical attraction sites found in the Zanzibar islands. Built in 1893, the prison was designated to be used for slaves but ended up being a quarantine for yellow fever patients. Apart from the ancient prison buildings, the island hosts a collection of endangered tortoise species as well peacocks who are free to roam around the prison.
