Mount Longonot was gazetted as a national park in the year 1983. Mount Longonot National Park was established to protect its dramatic volcanic landscape and unique ecological features. The park safeguards a relatively young stratovolcano that last erupted in 1863. Its name is derived from the Maasai word Oloong’onot, meaning “mountain of spurs” or “mountain of steep ridges,” reflecting its rugged terrain and sharply incised slopes. Covering approximately 52 square kilometres, the park has since become one of Kenya’s most popular destinations for hiking and adventure tourism.
