Visiting Chimpanzee Sanctuary at Olpejeta Conservancy
The Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary (Approximately 4 Hrs)
This is the only place in Kenya where you’ll be able to enjoy these loving Chimpanzee creatures. Here at the sanctuary, orphaned and abandoned chimps are rescued and carefully nursed back to health. When they are ready after rehabilitation, the chimps are introduced back to the wild where they can live freely at the Sanctuary in groups in vast natural enclosures separated by the Ewaso Nyiro River. Moreover, the chimps have set feeding times, and return to their indoor enclosures at night – but other than that they spend their days exploring, climbing, socialising, and learning to be chimpanzees all over again.
Ol Pejeta has been advocating for the endangered chimpanzees and other great apes since 1993 – when we first opened the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary. The Sanctuary aims to provide a refuge for chimpanzees rescued from the black market, and is the only place in Kenya where these fascinating animals can be seen.
